Talking to the counselor

March is here! I’ve sure enjoyed the last bit of February and the sunshine. I had a great time working in the kitchen at the STEAM night and getting to meet many of you. I always enjoy how proud children are to bring their parents to their school.

I am planning lessons for the final trimester now. The spring always goes so quickly but I feel there is so much more I want to teach the kids.

Grade K - We will continue Second Step lessons. This month our lessons will focus on managing frustrating feelings and calming down other strong feelings using the strategy of deep breathing.

Grade 1 - We will continue our lessons in the Second Step curriculum. Our lessons this month will focus on using self-talk as a calming down strategy and working through anger.

Grade 2 - We will also be working in the Second Step curriculum and our lessons will focus on how to manage anxious feelings and anger.

Grade 3 Second Step lessons will focus on how to handle disappointment following the 3 steps to stay calm. Stop, Name Your Feeling, Calm Down (counting, deep breathing, positive self-talk).

Grade 4 We will continue our lessons in Second Step and focus on how to handle different situations such as being called a mean name or jumping to conclusions. Students have now learned how to calm down using three steps – Stop, Name Your Feeling, Calm Down (counting, deep breathing, positive self-talk).

Grade 5 We are continuing our unit on stress management. In our last lesson students identified common stressors that occur in their lives. One of the most common stressors for pre-teens and teens are relationships with friends. Our lesson this month will focus on how to handle conflicts with others in a way that is respectful. I have been reading lately that this is one of the top skills that employers look for when hiring. It’s never too early to start practicing this important life skill.

I am available during conference week so please let me or your child’s teacher know if you have any questions about our classroom lessons or other concerns about your child.
