Our Mission

Students will make at least one year's growth to meet grade-level standards.

They will:

• Explore their world through the eyes of a scientist to emphasize the basic and critical skills of reading, writing, math and science;
• Represent their own beliefs inviting views or opinions from other members of the group while looking after one another; and
• Persevere in solving challenging problems even in the face of adversity.

Student, Parent and Community Involvement

Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be an active part of their child’s education, both at home and at school. The Rainier Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is very active and all parents are invited to get involved. The PTO organizes school volunteers through its Volunteer Coordinator position. Volunteers are seen on a daily basis reading with children, tutoring, working in the library, helping with special events, supervising field trips, assisting with classroom projects and celebrations, preparing materials, assisting with supervision on the playground, etc. The PTO sponsors a variety of events and ongoing activities that include family nights, book fairs and weekly sales. PTO provides financial support for assemblies, school-wide events, funding for classroom activity items and assists with technology needs. The PTO annually purchases nominated books for the Battle of the Books program.

Rainier has a thriving Watch D.O.G.S. program to encourage the father figures in our students lives to take an active role in their students’ day. Watch D.O.G.S. can be seen tutoring students, practicing flashcards in the hallway, helping at lunch and recess, or putting together resources for the school. Our Watch D.O.G.S. are a daily positive influence at Rainier. Rainier also partners with our JBLM community. They help during the school day, during busy lunch and recess times, and at our end of the year field days and goal celebrations. They also come to provide safety lessons to Rainier students.

Rainier is a Kids at Hope school. We believe that all students are capable of success, no exception, no excuses! Our staff works hard to connect with each child to learn about their abilities, interests and goals for their future. We believe that every student has the capacity to do great things. Rainier staff and students meet every morning for our Morning Opening. This time starts with the pledge of allegiance, followed by our staff and students reciting the Kids at Hope Pledge. This is also a time for announcements about upcoming events at Rainier and acknowledging our Watch D.O.G.S. for the day. We end our morning opening with our PBIS traits in a chant, “Be safe! Be respectful! Be responsible! Proud Panthers!”

Rainier had a very successful Science Fair again. Rainier had students go on to compete in the CPSD Science Expo, the South Sound Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Pacific Lutheran University, and the Washington State Science Fair.
As part of our Extended Learning After School Program, students were selected based on a variety of assessments and were provided opportunities for extra support in mathematics and reading.

Military and Family Life Consultants (MFLC) were of great assistance this year. Due to the unique challenges faced by military families, the Department of Defense is funding professionally licensed consulting staff to provide non-medical counseling services to Service members and their families, children and staff of Rainier Elementary. The MFLC assisted and supported staff working with children and families. We also receive amazing support through our School Behavioral Health Counselor. Our SBH provides outstanding support to Rainier students and families.

We had another fantastic family fitness night this year, with over 400 people attending. For this event, we partnered with local community health, recreation, and fitness organizations such as the YMCA, BMX USA, JBLM MWR, Lindquist Dental, and many more. Families had an opportunity to dance Zumba in the gym, run/walk laps on the field, and participate in a variety of family fun games around fitness and health.

More than $1,700 was donated at Jump Rope for Heart this year. This event was held with volunteers consisting of staff, parents, and community members to promote physical exercise, community service, and fundraising for research for the American Heart Association. We also had a group of students organize a Pennies for Patients fundraiser, raising $500 to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

School Improvement Plan

Rainier Elementary has four school improvement goals. They are the following:

Goal 1 Math: 85% of Rainier students will meet or exceed grade-level in math and disparities among all sub-groups will be eliminated as measured by state, district, and classroom assessments.

Goal 2 Literacy: 85% of Rainier students will meet or exceed grade-level in math and disparities among all sub-groups will be eliminated as measured by state, district, and classroom assessments.

Goal 3 Science: 85% of Rainier students will meet or exceed grade-level in science and disparities among all sub-groups will be eliminated as measured by state, district, and classroom assessments.

Goal 4 Professional Practices: As a result of intentional instructional practice all Rainier students will grow academically a minimum of one year and students below grade level will grow academically a minimum of 1.5 years.
