PE Learning Targets for October:

  • I can demonstrate my understanding of recess expectations by showing sportsmanship qualities listed on our sportsmanship checklist.
  • I can demonstrate my understanding of recess games by participating and playing by the rules.
  • I can solve an argument with a classmate by playing a quick game of “rock it out”.

Students in all grades have been learning new games to play at recess. This year my goal is to construct recess in a well-organized, structured, and positive environment. During recess this year students will have more choices of games/activities to play. For example, students will soon have the opportunity to practice yoga and gymnastics. Having more options at recess will help to decrease behavior problems, get kids moving more, allow students to meet new friends, and gain valuable social skills.

New York Road Runners: This year all grade levels will be participating in New York Road Runners. NYRR is a running program for students of all fitness levels and teaches kids the physical and mental benefits of running. Participation also helps in building self-esteem, and learn to make and reach personal goals. Students will set goals to run/walk a certain distance and earn rewards for reaching milestones along the way. Some examples of rewards are t-shirts, medals, and a sweatband! Students will have an opportunity to run/walk laps on the field in the morning before school starts (7:15-7:35) and during recess. This also ensures students get the mandatory amount of physical education required by the state of Washington per week. Please send your child to school wearing clothes and shoes that they can wear to run/walk on a daily basis.
